Dressage and Jumping Championships

Basel

March 28 – April 7, 2025

We will be putting together a program for the 2025 Dressage and Jumping World Championships to be held in Basel, Switzerland in 2025. We always enjoy exploring so as we plan our program, we have decided to expand it to include three nights in Milan with its grand cathedral and the LaScala theater, then travel by rail across the Alps to Basel.

Your expression of interest, with a small refundable deposit, will allow us to plan more confidently. I also expect that hotels will be requesting a deposit with our booking. We expect to be able to present final details early in 2024.

Burghley Horse Trials 2024

Burghley Horse Trials, Stamford, England

August 31 – September 9, 2024

We are delighted to be offering our program to the Burghley Horse Trials in 2024, where Derek di Grazia is continuing to design the challenging courses that have always been the hallmark of the event. As a spectator, I have always enjoyed Burghley, the event, the setting, the Members’ enclosure, as well as our hotels.

Saturday, August 31: Depart for London

Unless you are spending time in Britain or Europe, you will depart for London today.

Sunday, September 1: Welcome to London

On arrival proceed through the Immigration and Customs formalities and (we suggest) proceed to the Heathrow Express train to London Paddington and taxi to the Chesterfield Hotel.  We will be gathering this evening for drinks and dinner.

Monday & Tuesday, September 2 and 3: Sightseeing London

We have found that the best way to see London is by the Hop On/Hop Off sightseeing coaches. You will have passes for the free days to get to the various sights. Advanced tickets are needed for all the important sights these days, including Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and Windsor Castle.

Wednesday, September 4: To Cambridge and Peterborough

Depart London this morning for Cambridge and then on to Peterborough and our accommodation for the rest of the week.  In Cambridge, we will meet our guide for a fascinating tour of the city, including a visit to King’s College Chapel and the grounds of one of the colleges.

Later arrive in Peterborough and the Bull Hotel, an old coaching inn in the city center. After checking in to your executive rooms, join us for drinks in the bar.  Dinner is included each evening of our stay.

Thursday and Friday, September 5 & 6: Dressage at Burghley

We depart each morning to arrive at Burghley for the start of Dressage. As we will have Members’ privileges, we will have access to the Members’ only seats for Dressage (open seating, so settle in early). The Market Place has extensive shops and opportunities for some local treats.

You will find the Members’ tent area a comfortable place to gather. There is usually a nice buffet, bar and sandwich options. The tent also has closed circuit television so that you can watch the action there, with both the Dressage and XC with commentary.

Saturday, September 7: Cross Country Day

Now we get to see Derek’s challenge, as we follow the riders around the course (or on closed circuit. There are usually big screens around the course as well as in the stadium, where the final jumps are located.  The score board is posted as results come in.  There you will see which fences are causing the most difficulties.

Sunday, September 8: Show Jumping Finals

If there are requests, we will offer two shuttles to Burghley today. One for those wishing to see the final horse inspection and one for those enjoying a leisurely breakfast and later departure.  Jumping usually begins at 10:00, with the top 25 riding in the afternoon.

Following final presentations, return to the Bull for drinks and dinner, celebrating an exciting 2024 Burghley.

Monday, September 9: Early departure to Heathrow

We plan on arriving at Heathrow by 7:00 in time for flights after 9:30.

Bramham Horse Trials, Yorkshire England

Bramham Horse Trials, Yorkshire England

June 3 – 12, 2023

I am delighted that we will finally be going to Yorkshire and to the ancient city of York, founded by the Romans and occupied by the Saxons, Vikings and finally, the Normans.  It is a lovely, historic city, with the York Minster, largest medieval cathedral in England and the city walls. Our accommodations will be in “the Shambles”, the best-preserved medieval street in York, lined with interesting shops, pubs, and restaurants.

After several days of enjoying the city and a day of visiting nearby sites in Yorkshire, we will be off to the Bramham estate and the Bramham Horse Trials. The course designer has been Ian Stark, and we hope he continues.  Evenings back in York give you time to enjoy the city.

Saturday, June 3: Depart for York

Unless you decide to spend time in Britain or Europe prior to the Bramham program, you will depart today for Leeds.  There are various connections into Leeds or you may choose to fly into London and travel the two hour rail journey directly to York.

Sunday, June 4: Welcome, the Medieval town awaits you.

Clear customs on arrival.  We will have several transfers arranged. You’ll find our delightful accommodation at the Hotel Indigo located in the Shambles, a short walk for the Minster, but with so much to explore in route. Drinks reception this evening followed by dinner.

Monday, June 5: Walking tour of York

A full English breakfast will start each day here in York. Today join us for a walking tour of the city, including the magnificent Minster, completed in 1472, on the site of three previous churches.

Walk the Shambles and Stonegate, dating to Roman times, the City Walls, and get to know the other sites you can visit. After lunch, visit the Jorvik Viking Center, exploring pre-Norman York.

Tuesday, June 6: Exploring Newby Hall and Castle Howard

Off for the countryside and to two interesting great houses, quite different. For Downton Abbey, the producers moved Highclere Castle from Gloucestershire to Yorkshire, not an easy task! You will find that Newby Hall seem the perfect setting for the Crawley’s. A lovely house and garden.

After our visit continue to Castle Howard where we have lunch prior to our visit. Many might remember this great house as the setting for the PBS series, Brideshead Revisited. The house is a great baroque palace and is surrounded by gardens, monuments, and lakes. An 18-C bon vivant noted that a pheasant at Castle Howard lives better than a duke elsewhere.  You might well agree. Spend the afternoon here before returning to York.

Wednesday, June 7: Your day in York

Today is yours to enjoy the city, walk the city walls, visit the museums, shops, perhaps enjoy a nice morning coffee watching the city carry on.

Thursday and Friday, June 8 and 9: Dressage at the Bramham Horse Trails begins

Transfer to Bramham this morning where we have Member’s admission. The Member’s area and Marque offer a bistro and bar and a lawn area overlooking the ring.

In addition to the 4* event, there will be many other competitions and shows, including a stallion class, wonderful Pony Club competitions with challenging horsemanship, hunter shows (not the American variety) and BHS jumping competitions. You will find it all both interesting and entertaining.

There are extensive shops and a tempting Food Tent with local goods. We are planning to arrange a course walk with one of the officials during the day. The best place to watch the Dressage will be from the Member’s lawn area.

On return to York, perhaps enjoy a refreshment with friends before settling in for dinner. We seem to have a tradition of gathering in the bar or lounge to tell stories and talk over our day. Horse people make for pleasant fellowship.

Saturday, June 10: Cross Country Day

Early start today so you can get settled before the first horse on course. Find a comfortable spot (perhaps in the Member’s tent) or follow along with the horses as they take on the course. We hope to see Ian Stark, the current course designer, in 2023.

Sunday, June 11: Show Jumping Finals

Perhaps a more leisurely morning as we depart for the final day at Bramham’s with show jumping and awards. There will also be other competitions and shows, so you can enjoy a full day.

On return to York, join us for cocktails prior to a farewell dinner with your friends, old and new.

Monday, June 12: Transfers to Leeds for flights home

Join our transfer to Leeds Airport, this morning, for your flights home.  I hope that you enjoyed the city of York, the Horse Trials, and your experience with Equestrian Tours.

Thank you and safe travels

Blair Castle Horse Trials & Scottish Country Fair

Blair Castle Horse Trials & Scottish Country Fair

August 19 (arrive Edinburgh August 20)– 28, 2023

Due to the combination of the city of Edinburgh during the Edinburgh Festival (including the Military Tattoo performed in front of the Castle) and the setting for the Blair Castle Horse Trials in the Highlands of Scotland, this is one of my favorite programs.  Our three days in Edinburgh will allow visits to the Castle, the now retired HMS Britannia, Holyrood House (the Queens Edinburgh residence) and allow us to enjoy a performance of the Tattoo.  It will also leave time for a stroll through the garden, enjoy the shops and other sights of the City.

Then we spend five in the Highlands, touring Blair Castle, home to the Dukes of Atholl, and enjoying the Blair Castle Horse Trials, in an absolutely beautiful setting.  I think you’ll very much enjoy our program and your travelling companions.

(When you see the lines waiting ticketing at these sites, you will appreciate having tickets in hand!) Later today and on Tuesday you can continue exploring, visiting and perhaps enjoy tea on the Britannia.  You might consider attending a “Fringe Festival” performance or one of the special performances of the Edinburgh Festival. (Please purchase tickets for Festival performances online and well in advance).

Tuesday, August 22 – Edinburgh at Leisure

Today is free to continue exploring on the Edinburgh shuttles as you wish, perhaps including the HMS Britannia (I would suggest a morning visit with tea, leaving time in the afternoon for the gardens, the museums, or the shops of Edinburgh.

This evening we will attend the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, in the forecourt of the Castle.

Wednesday, August 23 – Off to the Highlands and Blair Atholl

At 9:00 am we depart for the Highlands, stopping to visit in the rather remarkable Kelpies and have time for coffee.  Later continue to Pitlochry where there will be time for lunch.  This afternoon visit the Edradour Distillery, the smallest in Scotland, for a tour and tasting.  Then on to Blair Castle, home to the Dukes of Atholl. Later check into our accommodations in Pitlochry at the Pine Trees Hotel, easy walking distance to the town center..

Join us for drinks this evening prior to dinner.

Thursday, August 24 – Day 1 of the Blair Castle Horse Trials

After our Scottish breakfast, transfer to Blair Atholl and the horse trials venue.  The Members tent has private dining and bar as well as a viewing area overlooking the dressage/show jumping ring.  Late afternoon we return to our accommodations.  For those who wish, there is rail service between Pitlochry and Blair Atholl.

Friday, August 25 – Dressage continues

Dressage continues today. Perhaps we can walk cross country course.  Enjoy the marketplace, with some 200 vendors.  The Member’s Tent is well organized and is adjacent to the dressage ring, with chairs on the grass.

Saturday, August 28 – Cross Country Day at Blair Castle

In addition to the very exciting cross country riding today, the Bruadar Country Fair offers demonstrations of traditional and modern country pursuits and displays and a local jumper show.

Sunday, August 27– Show Jumping Finals & the Fair Continues

We expect a later start today, giving time to enjoy the Fair before the final show jumping phase begins.  This evening we will gather for a reception prior to our farewell dinner.  (I think we should all be required to wear something tartan!)

Monday, August 28 – Early departure for Edinburgh and return flights home

We plan an early departure this morning to be at Edinburgh Airport in time for 9:30am flights.  The hotel will have refreshments laid out for us prior to departure. We wish you a safe journey home and look forward to seeing you again, soon.

Badminton Horse Trials – 2022

Badminton Horse Trials – 2022

April 29 depart (arrive London April 30), return May 9, 2022

We have long enjoyed the Badminton Horse Trials and have taken quite a number of clients there over the years. Having had the experience, I think we put together a very nice program. We plan on including a garden visit at Highgrove House, home of Prince Charles and Lady Camilla (pending final confirmation).  I hope that as you read on, you will agree.

We will have time in London as there is always more to see.  The Hop-on-Hop off tour shuttle has proven hugely popular, and you will have a free day, perhaps choosing to visit Windsor or Winchester.

Friday, April 29 Usual U.S. Departure Day for London

Those traveling from the U.S. will depart today.  We recommend flights into and out of Heathrow.

Saturday, April 30: Welcome to London

Easy and speedy transfer into London on the Heathrow Express. On arrival at the St Ermin’s Hotel, check in and relax.  Light meals are available in the lounge and there Enjoy speedy transfer on the Heathrow Express Train to Paddington Station, then a short taxi to the Chesterfield Hotel. Check-in is generally in the early afternoon. You will, no doubt, find your way to Shephard Market, which used to be one of my favorite hide-a-ways. You will also find Green Park, Hyde Park and Piccadilly area shops and restaurants nearby.  Join us for drinks this evening prior to dinner.

Sunday, May 1: London sightseeing at your leisure

Quite a lovely breakfast buffet is included each day of our program.  Day tickets will be provided for you to enjoy sightseeing of London on Sunday and Monday, enjoying its principal sights at your leisure on the Hop on/Hop off tour shuttle service, allowing you to get on and off at the various stops as you wish.

Monday, May 2: Free time continues with Hop on/Hop Off Sightseeing

The day is free to enjoy.  If you haven’t seen it, don’t miss the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace or the Horse Guard at Whitehall, both within easy walking distance. We will have the schedule in our final information letter. From there, you are a short walk to Piccadilly and the Tube lines to take you throughout London.  Enjoy your day.  Those wishing to enjoy an evening of London theater should purchase tickets in advance.  There are a number of good on-line ticketing agencies.

Tuesday, May 3: Free day to explore, perhaps farther afield

You may wish to travel to Windsor to visit the town and Castle. (Please get entry tickets in advance). There is regular rail service. This would be a full day, 9 to 4:30 or so.  (Cost with train and Castle admission will be approximately 30 pounds.)

Alternatively, you can join me on a visit to Winchester to visit Winchester Cathedral, view Winchester Collage, the Castle and visit the Hospital at St Cross. Founded in the 12-C., it continues as an Alms House today. The residents still wear the robes assigned by the original benefactors, black robes for 13 men under the gift of Henry of Blois and red for those of Cardinal Beaufort of Winchester. (Cost with train and admissions approx. 60 pounds).  I believe we can still request the ‘dole’.

Wednesday, May 4:  Off to Gloucestershire

Depart London this morning for Gloucestershire and Tetbury. My hope is that we will be able to visit the gardens of Highgrove House, the home of Prince Charles & Camellia, Duchess of Cornwall this afternoon. The gardens are extensive.  The opening is dependent on the whether the Duke and Duchess are in residence.

Later, check in to our accommodations at the Pettifer’s Hotel in Crudwell. We will gather for drinks in the bar prior to dinner this evening.  You will find its’ location, quite close to Badminton, to be convenient. With far less traffic as we return in the evening. Friday, May 6: Badminton Dressage & the Beaufort Kennels

Return to Badminton this morning as dressage continues.  We will be requesting a visit to the Beaufort Kennels with an introduction to the hounds, for those who wish.  Such a visit is a “gift of the Master” and done with his permission only.  During one of the dressage days, you may want to walk the course.

Saturday, May 7:  Cross Country Day

Departure today to be settled on cross country well in advance of the first horse on course.  The Badminton course has always been one of the most challenging, going back to its beginning in 1949 with Col. Weldon, director and course designer.  You will find refreshment tents on the course, and you can always watch important rides in the Members tent or in the stands, where there will be several fences and the finish line.

Sunday, May 8:  Horse Inspection, Special Presentations & Final Show Jumping & Prizes

As the police allow only one way traffic arriving Badminton this morning or departing in the evening, we will have an early coach departure to take in the Horse inspection prior to the first horse on course. Breakfast is offered in the Member’s Tent.  In addition to the Show Jumping, there will be special presentations, band performances and a presentation of the Beaufort Hounds.

This evening we gather for a farewell reception prior to dinner.

Aachen Equestrian Festival – 2022

June 25 (Arrive Dusseldorf June 26) – July 4, 2022

It is never too early to think about reserving for our Aachen Equestrian Festival program.  Season tickets regularly sell out nine to ten months in advance of the Festival, which is why we purchase our tickets a year or more in advance! In doing so we must limit our purchase to expected demand. We have sold out the last three years, so please don’t delay if you are interested.  Aachen is the finest equestrian competition offered anywhere in just about any given year, and for 2022 will be the major selection trial for the World Championships.  I would expect that everyone you might see in Herning will be at the Aachen Festival!

The city of Aachen is inviting, historic and filled with friendly pubs and restaurants.  But you will be spending most of you time at the Aachen Festival venue as there are classes for both Dressage and Jumping almost every day and evening.  Our programs offer the option of Dressage season tickets (with jumping and opening ceremonies on Tuesday and Grand Prix of Aachen and closing ceremonies on Sunday) or Show Jumping season tickets (with the Grand Prix Freestyle on Sunday morning).

Burghley Horse Trials 2021

Burghley Horse Trials, Stamford, England

August 27 – September 5, 2021

You will find our accommodations, both at the Hotel Chesterfield in London (for 4 nights) and in Peterborough (5 nights) very pleasant indeed, and both very well located.  The Bull Hotel in Peterborough, is an old coaching inn in the middle of the town, is one we have enjoyed for many years.

Free day to explore as you wish today. You might choose to visit Kew Gardens and Queen Charlotte’s Cottage; take the tube to Greenwich to visit the Royal Naval College and the Old Royal Observatory (Prime Meridian); or join me. I plan on taking the train to Windsor to visit the town and Windsor Castle, walk down to observe the “Long Walk” and lunch in a comfortable pub.

Wednesday, September 1: Depart for Cambridge and Peterborough

Depart for the university town of Cambridge for a delightful walking tour.  Meet our guide on arrival, and after a short break, tour the town and college area.  Some will be “punting on the Cam”, a favorite past time here in Cambridge. Time following our tour for lunch and shopping as you choose. This afternoon we continue to Peterborough and the Bull Hotel.  Dinner is included each evening of our stay.

Thursday, September 2: Dressage

Depart for Burghley for the first day of dressage.  Members have exclusive access to the North Stands for dressage on Thursday & Friday. Throughout the event enjoy the privileges of the Members tent, including closed circuit television where you will also be able to watch the event with commentary.  In addition, the Members area has its own bars, restaurants and their own loos.

Friday, September 3: Dressage Continues

Dressage continues today, with closed circuit TV in the Members’ Tent.  There are a wonderful variety of shops in the marketplace as well as other alternatives for food (nothing like a bacon bap and tea), but the Member’s Tent will offer the best place to sit and relax over lunch. Pim’s anyone?

Saturday, September 4: Cross Country

A 9:00 departure will allow you to be at your favorite fence as the first horse begins cross-country.  During rides of particular interest, you may want to be in the Members’ Tent or in the stands, where there will be XC jumps and a large screen to watch the entire ride. You will also find closed circuit TV and refreshments, at several points on course.  This has always been a consistently challenging course.

Sunday, September 5: Final Horse Inspection and Show Jumping

Early departure for Burghley this morning, for the final horse inspection.  If necessary we will have a second transfer for those choosing a more leisurely morning.  After the final presentation of prizes return to Peterborough for a drinks reception prior to dinner, celebrating a safe ride for all the horses & riders and perhaps some American success.

Monday, September 6: – Heathrow and Home

Early departure this morning will allow us to reach Heathrow for 9:30 or later flights.

Badminton Horse Trials – 2021

Badminton Horse Trials – 2021

May 1 depart (arrive London May 2), return May 10, 2021

We have long enjoyed the Badminton Horse Trials and have taken quite a number of clients there over the years. Having had the experience, I think we put together a very nice program. We will be including a garden visit at Highgrove House, home of Prince Charles and Lady Camilla (pending final confirmation).  I hope that as you read on, you will agree.

We will have time in London as there is always more to see.  The Hop-on-Hop off tour shuttle has proven hugely popular and in spite of my many visits here, there are sights I have yet to explore.

Saturday, May 1:  Usual U.S. Departure Day for London

Those traveling from the U.S. will depart today.  We recommend flights into and out of Heathrow.

Sunday, May 2:  Welcome to London

Easy and speedy transfer into London on the Heathrow Express. On arrival at the St Ermin’s Hotel, check in and relax.  Light meals are available in the lounge and there are several pubs in the neighborhood.  You will also find Green Park and Piccadilly area shops and restaurants nearby.  Join us for drinks this evening in the Caxton Bar prior to dinner.

Monday, May 3: London sightseeing at your leisure

Breakfast buffet is included each day of our program.  Day tickets will be provided for you to enjoy sightseeing of London on Monday & Tuesday, enjoying its principle sights at your leisure on the Open Top Bus Tour shuttle, allowing you to get on and off at the various stops as you wish.  (We have had excellent comments on this service).

Tuesday, May 4:  Free time in London

The day is free to enjoy.  If you haven’t seen it, don’t miss the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace or the Horse Guard at Whitehall, both within easy walking distance. We will have the schedule in our final information letter. From there, you are a short walk to Piccadilly and the Tube lines to take you throughout London.  Enjoy your day.  Those wishing to enjoy an evening of London theater should purchase tickets in advance.  There are a number of good on-line ticketing agencies.

Wednesday, May 5:  Off to Gloucestershire

Depart London this morning for Gloucestershire and Cirencester.  I thought it would be interesting to do a round about route to view the “White Horse”, cut into the turf, perhaps dating to the Iceni (1st or 2nd C BC).  At nearly 400 feet long, it is a notable landmark. Then on to Cirencester to deposit our bags and have time to lunch.

My hope is that we will be able to visit the gardens of Highgrove House, the home of Prince Charles & Camellia, Duchess of Cornwall this afternoon. The gardens are extensive.

We will gather for drinks in the bar prior to dinner this evening at the King’s Head. This hotel has been extensively refurbished and is now a solid 4-star hotel.

Thursday, May 6: Badminton Dressage begins

To Badminton  this morning, private home to the Dukes of Beaufort, Masters of the Beaufort Hunt.  During the Badminton Horse Trials we will enjoy Member’s Privileges, with access to a restricted area which includes dining with a variety of offers, several bars, closed circuit television and a garden area overlooking the arena.  When you have time, the shops at Badminton are extensive.

Friday, May 7: Badminton Dressage & the Beaufort Kennels

Return to Badminton this morning as dressage continues at the Badminton Horse Trials.  We will be requesting a visit to the Beaufort Kennels, for those who wish, with an introduction to the hounds.  Such a visit is a “gift of the Master” and done with his permission only.  During one of the dressage days we can gather for a course walk.

Saturday, May 8:  Cross Country Day

Departure today to be settled on cross country well in advance of the first horse on course.  The Badminton Horse Trials course has always been one of the most challenging, going back to its beginning in 1949.  You will find refreshment tents on the course and you can always watch important rides in the Members tent.  There will be open seating in the main Grandstand, where there are usually several jumps.

Sunday, May 9:  Horse Inspection, Special Presentations & Final Show Jumping & Prizes

If the police are allowing traffic to depart Badminton this morning, we will have an early coach departure for those wishing to take in the Horse inspection as well as a later departure.  Breakfast will be offered in the Member’s Tent.  In addition to the Show Jumping, there will be special presentations, band performances and a presentation of the Beaufort Hounds.

This evening we gather for a farewell reception to the Badminton Horse Trials prior to dinner here at the hotel.

Monday, May 10:  Depart for Heathrow & Home

We have an early start today to get us to Heathrow by 7:00 in time for 9:30 (or later) flights.  We are requesting that the hotel have a light breakfast available for us, so that you will be somewhat fortified before we depart.  Those departing from Gatwick should plan on a two-hour transfer from Heathrow and should not plan on flights earlier than 11:30.

Costs per person: $2,795 twin or double basis; $3,895 single basis

Program includes: 3 Nights London; 5 nights Cirencester; breakfast daily, 3 receptions and 3 dinners; London sightseeing, admissions and other sightseeing as outlined, admission and Member’s privileges at the Badminton Horse Trials and members seating for dressage reserved seating for show jumping; transfers, transportation as outlined and services of an Equestrian Tours host.
